South Side San Antonio Mini Storage Was the First
Owner and president of the Texas Self Storage Association created the first solution for the south side. His knowledge also serves other mini storage owners around the state.
San Antonio TX, April 2012. Mark Skeans started doing business on the south side of San Antonio in the late 1980s. Now also an owner of a San Antonio mini storage called Mission Road Mini Storage, he remembers when SE Military Drive was ?the strip? for teenagers to drive up and down and so much so that the police at one time shut it down by enforcing a curfew. But that was a long time ago and business has grown tremendously since then. Skeans says, ?It had come a long way already when the Brooks Air Force Base was closed down. Brooks (Air Force Base) was one of the oldest facilities in the United States Air Force, being established on 8 December 1917 as Kelly Field No. 5, being one of the initial World War I Army Air Service installations. Flying at Brooks, however predates its military establishment, as the facility was known as Gosport Field prior to the first Army airplanes arriving on 5 December 1917.
In 2002 Brooks Air Force Base was renamed Brooks City-Base when the property was conveyed to the Brooks Development Authority, the developer of the Brooks City-Base property whose mission is to redevelop the property into a science, business, and technology center. Skeans says, ?The development created another burst in business, attracting many of the bigger chain retailers to start a location on the south side.?
Because of his start up of the San Antonio mini storage called Mission Road Mini Storage in the late 1990s, Mark has become so knowledgeable and involved in the storage industry he is now serving his 2nd three year term as President of Texas Self Storage Association. TXSSA.org ?This organization has over 3000 members? and represents over 3300 storage facilities in Texas.? Skeans commented. At over 5700 storage units, Texas and has most storage units of any state in the US. The difference between the number members units and number of overall units in Texas is because the big national storage companies are not a member of the Texas Self Storage Association simply because they don?t want to have to be a member of and keep up with every association in every state.
Skeans says, ?This is really unheard of in the industry but only one break in has happened in the 12 year history of Mission Road Mini Storage and even that one was a fluke where the perpetrator was captured in the act and on camera!? Apparently the fellow that was renting the unit didn?t put on the free lock that is given out when a new customer rents a unit. ?This lock is the most secure and most difficult to break for the price but for some reason this customer insisted on using his own combination lock.? says Skeans. The burglar only had to cut the lock with a cheap bolt cutter and probably would have been deterred if the better lock had been used.
