The City of Miramar was incorporated May 26th, 1955. at the time of incorporation, the City had a population of less than two hundred people. With approximately 2.9 square miles in area, Miramar's original city boundaries were S.W. 64th Avenue on the east, University Drive on the West, the Dade County Line on the south and Pembroke Road on the north.

On June 20th, 1955, the City's first Mayor and City council were sworn in, all of which were appointed by the Governor.

AEROBICS OF THE MIND (NEW CLASS): It is just as important to keep our brains in shape as it is to keep our bodies in shape. That’s just the reason you should come and exercise your mind with us at the Sunset Lakes Health and Wellness Center on Thursdays at 12:45 p.m.

CHAIR DANCING: Get that blood flowing in a very low impact, seated, chair dance class on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

CHAIR JAZZERCISE: If you like chair dancing you are going to love Chair Jazzercise! This is just as upbeat and exciting as Jazzercise but for those who would prefer a seated class. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

CHOIR: Come and be a part of our newest class. This is a wonderful opportunity to sing all of your old favorites and even to perform them out in the community of Sunset Lakes, in Miramar. We are looking for people who like to sing and have a good time. Mondays at 12:30 p.m.

COMPUTER CLASS- (COMING SOON!!): What a fantastic opportunity to get acquainted with the computer while making friends in the process. Come on down to Miramar!

ENGLISH CLASS: Need practice or just the basics of English? How about joining our multicultural class of future English speakers? Fridays at 10:00 a.m.

GAMES: We have a variety of table games from cards to Dominoes, to Scrabble to Mah Jongg. If you like relaxing with friends while having fun, then join us for a variety of games played all day at your convenience.

JAZZERCISE: This high rhythm low impact class is specially designed for seniors looking for an opportunity to get in shape and have a great time. Join one of our two classes. This class gets shakin’ at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

REMINISCENCE GROUP: Exercise your brain or just remember the “good ole’ days” in the Reminiscence Group led by our own social worker. Wednesdays at 11 a.m.

SCRAP BOOKING (NEW CLASS!!): This brand new class is for both those who have never scrap booked before as well as “old pros” that would just like to practice their talent with new friends. This basic scrap booking class is sure to become a favorite. Fridays at 12:45 p.m. at the one and only Sunset Lakes Wellness Center.

SEWING CLASS: With the holidays coming up this is the perfect time to start working on crafts. How about learning to sew a variety of simple projects or just practicing a skill you have. Fridays 10:30 a.m.

SPANISH CLASS: In this diverse area many of us would like to learn Spanish. Be a part of our growing group of seniors who are trying their hand and their head at learning Spanish. Beginner’s welcome! Fridays at 11:00 a.m.

TRAVEL CLUB: This exciting club takes you around the world without ever having to leave our center. We meet at 12:45 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month to learn about a new country or travel destination.

WALKING CLUB: What better excuse to converse with others and meet new people. Our walking club is an excellent way to get in shape at your own pace. We will meet in the senior center at 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays. This group also meets on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for walking at the Pembroke Lakes Mall.

YOGA (COMING SOON!!): What better way to get the week started than with a long stretch and a burst of energy? Yoga is shown to improve flexibility, blood flow and energy levels. This excellent class is now being offered at the center every Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Sunset Lakes Health and Wellness Center.

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING
Blood pressure is checked by the award winning Miramar Fire Rescue Team free of charge every Monday and Friday at 1 p.m.

GROCERY SHOPPING
If you need to get to the grocery store, we are delighted to take you. Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

LUNCH
Provided on site by Broward Meals on Wheels from 12 p.m.-12:30 p.m. every weekday. Meals must be ordered by 11:00 am on the day prior to receiving the meal.

Celebrate Black History Month with the Town of Miramar
Bring your family and friends to Miramar's Black History Celebration--the best part is, its free! A fashion show featuring beautiful authentic African style clothing will be presented, along with poetry, drama, and Fairway Elementary School Dance Team. Actor Larry Robinson will perform African-American Portrait Gallery: Discovering Timeless Hero's. Also performing will be young rapper Mama, formerly known as Lil Mama. Enter the lottery for your chance to participate in our first Breakdancing Contest where the winner will receive $100 cash. Live entertainment will have everyone dancing. The children will enjoy a free basketball clinic sponsored by One-on-One Basketball, as well as the inflatable rides. Food will be available for purchase. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005; 5-9 pm. The first meeting of the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce was held in 1969 in the Miramar Diner, with 17 members attending.
Ed Minaya, then publisher of the Mirror, brought together 19 local businesspeople and formed a charter to organize the Miramar-Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce. Incorporation came on December 11, 1969.

As the Chamber membership has grown a portion of our membership is derived from outside of the Miramar-Pembroke Pines area which keeps us on the cutting edge of the regional concept, thus the Chamber added “Regional” to its name.
