Cheap Hosting?
I have some important information to help you decide upon a "good" hosting company.
I started using web hosting firms in 1996. In the years that followed I have used other hosting firms ranging in fees from $5 to $20 monthly. All of these firms are out-of-business because their rates were too low. In March 2002, Advent Digital started providing our clients with the option of running their website on our own servers. Please allow me to share a serious example with you:
In 2001 I built a website for a firm called Power Tech. They market power control panels for large manufacturing businesses, where power levels must be precisely 120 or 220 volts. Their equipment protects sensitive electronic gear from spikes and surges. In March 2002 Power Tech had gained the attention of Hyundai, and in fact had an appointment with the American Vice President of Hyundai in the Dallas area. The owner of Power Tech called me on the day of his Hyundai appointment because his website was down. Power Tech was using one of America's largest hosts, Primemaster. They selected Primemaster because of the low rate of $7.77 per month. Well, you can guess what happened. Primemaster went bankrupt, their bandwidth was pulled, and many thousands of websites went down in a day, with no advanced warning. I was told to switch the Power Tech website to the Advent Digital servers. The change of host was completed and up and running ASAP. But it was too late. Power Tech was told to "get your act together" by the VP at Hyundai, and a $200,000 to $400,000 order was lost.
